Not only are populations in industrialised countries ageing rapidly, the proportion of older people who are dentate is also increasing. Half of those aged 65+ will end up entering aged residential care, and that sector is ill-prepared for what is coming (as is the dental profession). New Zealand conducted a national survey of oral health among dependent older people. In this presentation, Thomson will share some of the findings and their implications.
1. Appreciate the demographic aspects of the ageing population.
2. Understand the influences on oral health in frail older people.
3. Appreciate the ageing-associated challenges which face society and the dental profession.
